Bonjour
''''''There
were NO Bills of Health for Algeria, Stora issued during 1838. However, from Nov 1839 to Dec 1840, the
number whose destination was given as STORA increased dramatically to more
than 600.
For the city of Oran, there
were only three applicants.
The greater majority stated
Bona as their destination.
Not all applicants for a Bill
of Health were migrants. Some were
traders, who made multiple trips, and a handful was professional people or
religious.
There were several who left
Malta for Algeria as whole families (wives and children)or were brothers,
sons or daughters of the applicant.
A knowledge of the history and
economy of Algeria in the 1840s is needed to interprete these data correctly
within the context of the time. I do
not possess this knowledge.
It seems that Stora to be situated in the Bay
of STORA - then re named Philippeville
as you suspected. I read in our group
a story from somebody Maltese - who told that he remembers the story told by his GGG grand
mother arriving from Malta and having to jump from the boat in the sea
and be carried to the rivage because their was no port in those days to land that is why actually most of the
people in 1810 / 1830 went to Tunis
before going to Algeria and had to take a an horse-drawn-cart to
finish the voyage to Algéria
(information kindly given by Josyanne Massa)
