Thanks for your help Theresa. The article you referred me to gives a great picture of the challenges of searching, but also makes me thankful for progress that can be made. I believe I have found the birth of my great great grandfather's second wife Emilia BARBARA (3 Sep 1849) in the Cospicua Parish archive of the Archdiocese of Malta, and possibly a link by marriage between the her BARBARA family and the TRIONFI family, an uncommon name, from which came his third wife. A hypothesis to test in more archival searching. Thanks again. John
