For Frank Sammut:
You will find the following details of the origina of the Borg surname in Maltagenealogy.com as follows:-
Origins: The possible origins of the Noble House of Borg, may have derived from the once Powerful
Papal and later Spanish
Ducal family of Borgia.
An extract of the Borgia
family are posted in Interesting connection.
The earliest Know Borg in my
record is a Luca Borg in 1538. Though still looking for that origin which will
provide the
answer to why there are so many Borgs in Europe (from Sweden to
Spain and in Malta)
Reference:
1. Genealogy
It is very difficult to find the correct origin as you may be aware that along the North African the are little villages which have the name Borg in them such as 'Borg el Arab', it is even used in the Arab Emirates area as 'Burj'. Whilst in Europe, I understand, the meaning rages from fortification, such as castle, village or even to a simple mound of stones.
Cheers, Julius Borg, the Maltese of Egypt family tree man
P.S. I have now reached the 4/5 of a century, the memory is not as good as it used to be. Please do not hesitate to remind me of any questions/queries you may have put to me and I have not answered.
