this was the message I got

'''We have just published the 1936 passport applications (3100 new images)on the #ArchivesPortalEurope . If you have any problems in searching the applications on the portal, please send us an email on customercare.archives(at)gov.mt and we'll send you a set of instructions. The link to the portal is the following: https://www.archivesportaleurope.net/

Le lien direct vers le fond maltais : (see here)

https://www.archivesportaleurope.net/dir.../MT-NAM/fa

Thanks for the site links. I checked them . Unfortunately they miss the period I am interested in(1840-1850). I read that the national archives only have passport applications starting 1870. It leaves me wondering if those records , if they exist, are kept by the British.

Bonjour, Hi,

Il existe un fonds complémentaire, les 'certificats de bonne santé' qui couvre la période 1836-1850.

You can consult a complementary fonds called 'bills of health' from 1836 to 1850.

Ce fonds est microfilmé et numérisé.

Le microfilm peut être commandé auprès de FamilySearch :

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/...%20Library

This fonds has been microfilmed and digitized.

Resulting microfilms can be ordered on FamilySearch website:

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/...%20Library

Par ailleurs, le fonds a été indexé par Mark Caruana. Vous pouvez peut-être le contacter, il aura peut-être des informations sur vos ancêtres :

caruanamark(at)optusnet.com.au

In addition, Mark Caruana has indexed these records. You may contact him and find information regarding your ancestors:

Bien amicalement,

Best regards,

Thank you Tony,

In fact my cousin who is assisting me in this quest has contacted Mr. Mark, and we obtained the bill of health registers that helped in pinpointing the exact dates my ancestors left Malta to Beyrouth. On family search website, the funds you point to are called passport applications which is a bit confusing because the bill of health records are closer to being passenger lists than passport applications. Or do they contain more information?

Hi,

Bills of health are just lists of names and destination.

Thanks to the exact date, you can order a photo of the passenger list of your ancestors to the National Archives of Malta (see email address on their website). It will cost you just a few euros.

This passenger list will basically give you the same level of information + exact date of departure, name of the vessel and of the crew.

Best regards,

Tony Neulat.

Hello, In regards to passport applications. My ancestors were born in Corfu and Egpyt. In 1956, they had to apply for a uk passport. However, would earlier ancestors have applied for a Maltese passport?

Thank you

Clare
