Cloistered Convent in Vittoriosa? - q24angel - 28-10-2012 My grandfather who was born in 1884, had a sister who was born shortly before or after him. Because his mother died when they were young (perhaps during childbirth), the sister was apparently sent off to live in a cloistered convent. He never had any contact with her after that. She has always been a mystery in the family.. we don't even know her name. Were there more than one convents like this at that time? And does anyone know if it is possible to get any information about young girls who entered and lived there? Carol Re: Cloistered Convent in Vittoriosa? - g.buldrini - 28-10-2012 Dear Carol, Vittoriosa has the Benedictine Monastery of St. Scholastica, the former hospital of the Knights of St. John. In 1679 the church and part of the monastery were built again, and the church was consecrated by bishop labini on the 29 September 1788. I don't know is the convent was cloistered around 1880. The relics of the martyr, St. Veneranda, brought from Rome in 1728, are venerated in the church. The Priest in charge is the Rev Can Paul Raggio. Ciao! I just presumed it was in Vittoriosa because that is where my grandfather was born but I suppose it could be elsewhere. I guess I really will not know where she was until I find a name and a date. ![]() Carol A grand-aunt cloistered? (was: Cloistered Convent in Vittoriosa?) - g.buldrini - 30-10-2012 Dear Carol, usually if one takes vows as priest, friar or nun this is marked (as for marriage, if known by the priest)in the margin of the baptism record. Knowing the Parish church and the range of years you may order the CD with the microfilms of the baptism book at the Malta Study Center, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, in United states (Minnesota). The URL is - http://www.hmml.org/centers/malta/malta_start.html - . A digital copy on disk of a complete manuscripts costs $ 65.00 plus shipping. Ciao!
